Purpose of the job

The Fitter reports to the Mechanical Supervisor and has the primary responsibilities to:

  • Inspect the mechanical assets within the area of responsibility.
  • Repair and/or replace the equipment that is not fit-for-service or unsafe.
  • Maintain and/or improve mechanical assets to ensure safe, effective and continuous availability of the assets.
  • Ensure that the Housekeeping within the area of responsibility is always acceptable and/or better than it was before the artisan interacted with the area in question.
  • Ensure Feedback is given to the line manager concerning the Inspection, Repair and/or Replacement conducted within the area of responsibility.

The abovementioned activities shall be conducted in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, No. 85 of 1993. The responsibilities abovementioned shall include ensuring equipment is visibly marked for identification, changes to be registered and approved according to the MOC procedure and equipment is handed back to the internal customer in a safe, effective and clean way.

Key performance area

  1. Inspect.
    • Inspect the conditions of the mechanical equipment and identify any deviations concerning the normal effective operation of the mechanical equipment and supporting systems as per the Work Order instructions
  2. Repair, Replace and Maintain.
    • Repair and/or replace all mechanical equipment effectively and efficiently within the area of responsibility and hand over installation(s) to be available for safe operation thereof.
    • Repair and/or replace any safety guarding and/or safety system that has failed or not available for immediate safeguarding and protection of personnel and the environment.
    • Ensure that equipment is not modified or altered in any way without prior written approval through the MOC process
  3. Housekeeping.
    • Ensure that the housekeeping is always acceptable and is continually being improved. 
    • Ensure 5S is implemented and continually maintained.
    • Ensure the housekeeping enforces and/or enhance the safety of personnel within the area of responsibility
  4. Give Feedback.
    • Ensure that the feedback concerning the work completed on the work order is given to the relevant planner and/or foreman.
    • Ensure that all breakdowns have been investigated making use of the 5-Why investigation method at minimum.
    • Ensure that the root cause of the breakdown(s) is identified correctly and resolved accordingly

Production Supervisor (NP)

Division: Production (Northern Plants)

Reference Number: PSNP-07-25

Grade: C5

Purpose of the job

The Northern Plants Supervisor mainly is responsible for managing all production, production personnel and crisis response matters on a shift basis. The incumbent will be managing, revising, and improving all processes while on shift and must ensure that these functions are delivered to the organizational requirements. The incumbent must ensure that all resources are managed and controlled, e.g., raw materials, machines, people, cost as well as the actual delivery of required product within timelines. The incumbent will also be responsible for generating reports on a shift and monthly basis and ensure all recorded information is correct. The incumbent shall perform his duties at Northern Plants or at such other locations as the company may determine from time to time on notification to the incumbent. The incumbent will be responsible for the following process units: Plastichlor plant, Eaglebrook plant, HCl plant, and Hypo plants which include Sulphuric acid distribution.

In a case of manpower shortage, including standby personnel, the incumbent will also be required to assist in the roles, where necessary, until such a time that Senior Process Controllers/Process Controllers are available.

Key performance area

  1. Ensure effective Management of the Production Shift.
    • Provide input to the sections Production Plan.
    • Ensure compliance with production/output, SHERQ and PSM targets within shift.
    • Manage the relief schedule in line with annual leave and training plans for Senior Process Controllers and Process Controllers.
    • Ensure that all staff within their own shifts are aware of the monthly operational plan/requirements.
    • Implement all measurement mechanisms developed within own shifts.
    • Monitor progress to ensure successful implementation of plans and achievement of targets.
    • Report on any deviation within the system that affects the achievement of the shifts targets. This will include effective reporting of the section’s asset utilization.
    • Report on cost variances, raw material variances and system deviations to the section manager on a shift basis.
    • Produce progress and information reports according to requirements and timelines.
    • Prepare and submit unit reports or ad hoc reports to the Section Manager and Production Management Team as and when required.
    • Attend Departmental meetings, provide input to problem resolution and take steps to break down barriers that hinder progress.
    • Supervise shift production activities and quality assures all production output.
    • Implement set relevant ISO standards for NCP Plant Production.
    • Identify possible problems within current systems and make recommendations to the Unit section Manager regarding improvements to current systems, processes and policies.
    • Participate in incident/accident investigations, HAZOP studies and daily production meetings as required.
    • Ensure training of production staff on all systems, policies and procedures to minimize non-conformances.
    • Ensure compliance within the shift to ISO system.
    • Ensure that all practices are aligned with required SHE legislation, standards and policies.
    • Ensure that all shifts related systems and procedures used are legally compliant and integrated with other organizational systems.
    • Ensure compliance with all the appropriate control systems in place to manage section related resources and assets.
    • Ensure that staff is declared competent to do the required work (compliance to legislation, policies and procedures).
    • Implementation of Lean manufacturing systems and ensure compliance thereof (Statistical process control, Visual management, 5s, A3, A4, 8D, SMED).
    • Generate daily shift reports depicting site HCl production, Hypo production, Ferric/ferrous production and Plastichlor production.
  2. Effective Management of Production Efficiencies.
    • Manage production data.
    • Act as an information source on the plant for production, procedures, guidelines etc.
    • Checks and approves process data, e.g. quantities produced, raw materials consumption and ensures production information is updated and correct.
    • Communicates data with management during weekends and holidays.
    • Use production data to generate asset utilization reports, downtime reports and raw material variance reports daily.
    • Uses production data to generate asset utilization reports, downtime reports and raw material variance formal reports on a monthly basis.
    • Manage production output.
    • Manage the production teams on a shift basis
    • Co-ordinate the distribution of activities in conjunction with Shift personnel in accordance with the production plan.
    • Manage plant shutdown, start-up and shutdown activities.
    • Manage and respond to site emergencies in a safe and timely manner.
    • Identify breakdowns and problems on the production floor as quickly as possible.
    • Support or manage process-based fault analyses.
    • Determine and report on the causes of deviations.
    • Carry out Root Cause Analysis and introduce counter measures.
    • Communicate with the Process Engineering representatives to consider future permanent changes to the plant.
    • Ensure that scheduled maintenance occurs as per plant plan.
    • Maintain operations data, such as time, production, and cost records, and prepare management reports of production results.
    • Determine risks within the Production shift and develop mitigation steps
    • Investigate and write detailed reports on any incident and deviations (Output, Quality) on the system
  3. Achievement and management of shift plans and resources.
    • Manage and monitor financial risks within the shift.
    • Ensure continuous improvement shift efficiency.
    • Manage of shift human resources.
    • Provide information to the Northern Plants Manager regarding people and other resourcing needs.
    • Communicates effectively to ensure that production targets are met
    • Communicate and explain the impact of Management decisions on the shift.

    • Conduct performance appraisals as per policy requirements.
    • Ensure the provision of on-the-job training to staff when liaising with Human Resources has identified gaps with regard to required competencies.
    • Provide general training needs to Human Resources monthly.
    • Develop relevant work schedules monthly to ensure that all work within the shifts is covered.
    • Manage overtime costs (minimize the costs) and abuse of sick leave
    • Participate in the selection / promotion process.
    • Manage and resolve conflict between employees.
    • Ensure proper disciplinary and grievance procedure are implemented within own shifts.
    • Assist with the conducting of disciplinary hearings as required.
    • Manage and control time and attendance of personnel.
    • Ensure that all work completed by staff within the shift is correct.

  4. Ensure Environmental Health and Safety objectives and targets are met.

    • Implementation on a shift basis of SHEQ corrective and preventative actions
    • Ensure that the housekeeping of all areas within section are kept up to standards (<90% findings on housekeeping audits).
    • Responsible for safe making of equipment prior to maintenance, including completion of HIRA, Issue based Risk assessments and Issuing of Hot & Cold/Confined space work permits as Authorized or Designated official.
    • Conduct/Initiate A3 reports on EHS & PSM incidents on shift.

Production Supervisor (BU)

Purpose of the job

The Brine and Utilities Supervisor is responsible for managing the following areas: Salt handling, Chemical make-up, CBS, Primary & Secondary brine and Utilities.  The Supervisor is mainly responsible for managing all production, production personnel and crisis response matters on a shift basis. The incumbent will be managing, revising, and improving all processes while on shift and must ensure that these functions are delivered to the organizational requirements. The incumbent must ensure that all resources are managed and controlled, e.g., raw materials, machines, people, cost as well as the actual delivery of required product within timelines. The incumbent will also be responsible for generating reports on a shift basis and ensure all recorded information is correct. The incumbent will also rotate as required to be on rotation when required (training, and work of process systems review and updates)

In a case of manpower shortage in the plant and control room, the incumbent will also be required to assist until such a time that control room operators are available.

Key performance area

  1. Ensure effective Management of the Production Shift.
    • Overseeing the allocation and assignment of tasks to the workforce on the shift and ensuring that everyone understands their roles and responsibilities.
    • Managing the scheduling of relief shifts for Process controllers and Senior Process Controllers, considering annual leave and training plans, to meet the requirements set by regulations and maintain minimum shift strength.
    • Overtime management within the shift and across different shifts (including leave management and shift covers)
    • Checking in with personnel regularly during the shift to ensure they are physically and mentally ready to work.
    • Ensuring that the shift handover conducted by team members is thorough, efficient, and covers all relevant discussions about daily events in specific areas.
    • Checking plant monitoring log sheets to assess equipment and systems availability, utilization, and critical operating parameters, and ensuring that any deviations are promptly reported, logged, and addressed.
    • Observing team members while they perform their tasks to ensure that they follow the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and creating plans to address any reported deviations.
    • Checking the control room regularly to ensure that any deviations from operating parameters are reported and addressed with the relevant departments.

Solar Evaporation Farm Supervisor

Division: Maintenance

Purpose of the job

The Solar Evaporation Farm (SEF) is governed by various environmental legislative requirements and municipal by-laws, the major ones being (but not limited to) 

1)         National Water Management Act (NEMA) – The Water Use License (WUL)

2)         National Water Act – Dam Safety Regulations (Registered Dams) – 5 yearly North and South Dam inspection

3)         Inspections as per Code of Practice

4)         National Water Management Act (NEMA) – Water balances of NCP sites

5)         National Water Management Act (NEMA) – Ground water pollution.

6)         Alien and Invasive Species Regulations of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act – Alien and Invasive Vegetation.

The SEF Supervisor must ensure the Farm complies with the above-mentioned regulations / acts by doing inspections, audits, day to day maintenance as prescribed by these regulations / acts and any other pertinent legislation requirements that may arise. Fulfil the daily duties on the Solar Evaporation Farm according to COP.

Must have full understanding of SAP to reduce back log on job cards / notifications / statutory inspections and to optimise and continuously improve the preventative maintenance strategy Deviations captured and addressed regarding breakdowns / calls outs / notifications / job cards from SAP.  

Ensure that all Business standards are implemented and maintained as required within the environmental management field (OSHAS 18001, SANAS, ISO & SANS) standards etc. Ensure a full understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements and ensure that all legal inspections are carried out.

Ensure that safety standards are in place and new legislation changes are implemented accordingly.

The abovementioned activities shall be conducted in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, No. 85 of 1993 and all relevant NCP policies and procedures.   1. Manage the Solar Evaporation Farm team and assist with daily tasks.
    • To ensure that water meter readings, North & South Dam levels, main effluent meter readings, storm water readings, rain readings, salt and freshwater evaporation readings are taken daily and recorded on an excel spread sheet to distribute to the Primary Manufacturing Manager, Site Facilities Manager and General Manager: Operations.
    • Ensure that daily inspections for spillages are done according to the log sheet, the farm fence is inspected to determine any damage and ensure that repairs are done, that pumps and pipeline inspections are conducted daily to determine any damages and ensure that repairs are done, and that evaporation pans are inspected to detect any erosion or damages and ensure that repairs are done.
    • Ensure that weekly inspections are conducted on the Storm water channel and Effluent line from the factory to the Solar Evaporation Farm, and action any repairs required to ensure compliance.
    • Ensure that conductivity complies to instrument standard by conducting weekly tests with instrument personnel, that main effluent meter comply to instrument standard by conducting weekly tests with instrument personnel, that storm water & effluent samples are taken, and that V-Notches are cleaned on a weekly basis.
    • Ensure that fin drains inspection are conducted to determine if there are any blockages and ensure that the necessary cleaning is performed, that surface water samples are taken monthly according to the standard operating procedures and submit to the NCP Chlorchem laboratory for analysis,
    • Ensure that “V” notch flows are measured according to standard operating procedure and that inspection & maintenance are done on farm equipment & buildings according to the ISO 18001 standards.
    • Dam wall inspections are performed, that spillways are recoated with VIASEAL, that Catwalks inspections are conducted and recorded, and that area photographs of farms are arranged to compare any changes.
    • Ensure that the farm is inspected to locate pampas grass & wattle trees and inform the weed control contractor for removal.
    • Ensure the MOC process is followed when changes are made at the Solar Evaporation Farm.
    • Measure the levels of the boreholes monthly at the farm and report on an excel spread sheet.
    • Engage with various section Supervisors to identify effluent sources across site and implement mitigation strategies to reduce effluent discharge to the Solar Evaporation Farm.
    • Highlight / escalate any potential risks and non-compliances to the Site Facilities Manger as soon as practicably possible to ensure it can be addressed timeously.
    • Ensure that security is notified of any incidents found at the SEF (i.e. theft, cutting of HDPE pipes etc).
    • Contractor management:
      • Plan, organize, control, integrate and evaluate the work of all contractors at the SEF.
      • Ensure the weekly report is compiled by contractors and is distributed to Site Facilities Manager and/or Primary Manufacturing Manager
  2. Solar Evaporation Farm Safety Focus.
    • Review effectiveness of Planning / Gatekeeper Meetings by measuring it against the backlog list on a weekly basis.
    • Take necessary actions to prepare for the annual shutdown.
    • Ensure compliance of personnel by ensuring that risk assessments are done daily, auditing work areas and housekeeping after executing daily tasks.
    • Audit safety work permit book and SHE rep book, ensure notifications loaded in SAP to address findings.
    • Ensure respective legal appointments of personnel as per OHS Act (First aider, SHE rep, Authorizing official and Permit issuer, etc.)
    • Managing and implementing the necessary legal standards e.g.: SANAS, ISO, SANS, AWS D1.1, MHI, Dam Safety regulations, WUL, etc.
    • Ensure compliance with OSHAS 18001 at the Solar Evaporation Farm by conducting audits and closing the gaps identified on an on-going basis.
    • Ensure documents for major tenders and contractor work required have all safety aspects covered to allow safe working conditions before work commence.
    •  Ensure that contractors comply with safety standards and legislation when working at the Solar Evaporation Farm by doing safety audits monthly.
    • Ensure all tasks, non-conformances, corrective actions, preventative actions, etc. assigned to the SEF Supervisor are addressed within allocated time frame or follow the concession process to extend deadlines.
  3. Investigate equipment failures to stop re-occurrences.
    • To ensure that re-occurrences of equipment failures are stopped by conducting call-out and overtime investigations and compiling monthly reports. 
    • To ensure that equipment failures are investigated by doing problem solving and RCI’s on failed equipment within the timeframe as specified in the RCI requirements.
  4. Report writing, conduct inspections and audits as required by COP
    • The spillways leading to these canals, together with the Gabion structures and inlet pipes from surrounding areas, must be inspected daily during periods of prolonged or high-water flow, for erosion, corrosion and settlement, and any defects reported to the Professional Engineer immediately.
    • Every two years these fin drains should be internally photographed by a specialist contractor, under the direction of the Professional Engineer, to ensure that they are operating efficiently and that no blockages have occurred.
    • Several fin drains have been installed across the farm, and these must be inspected monthly and monitored to make sure that their outlets are clear. The fin drain discharge flow rates must be measured fortnightly by means of the V-notch weirs. The information is to be recorded and maintained by the Work Coordinator and presented at a monthly meeting with the Professional Engineer.
    • Comply With Alien and Invasive Species Regulations of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act
    • Remove Pampas grass, Black wattle trees, blue gum trees and Reeds.
    • Modifications to the facility
    • Any modification to the geometry and deposition rate must be properly integrated into the existing pan system under the direction of a Professional Engineer and must be handled as a project.
    • Decommissioning
    • When discussing decommissioning alternatives, a Professional Engineer should be appointed to ensure that the design of each aspect of the facility is safe and fit for the purpose.
    • Earth wall stability
    • The various earth dam walls should be surveyed annually by a professional engineer and together with visual inspections assessed for stability at critical sections.
  5. Budgeting and cost control
    • Control fixed cost budgets allocated per area by monitoring the cost displayed on SAP.
    • Assist with annual budget requirements.
    • Ensure compliance with purchasing procedures as set by the procurement department

Purpose of the job

The Fire and Rescue Officer reports to the Business Security & Rescue Manager. The Fire and Rescue Officer is required to respond to a wide variety of calls: as well as fires, assist with safe making of equipment for vessel entry, and hazardous chemical spills. The incumbent must conduct inspections of fire equipment on site, complete all relevant documentation for auditing and for future reference.

The Fire and Rescue Officer provides first aid assistance to the injured wherein their goal is to stabilize the person before transferring them to the NCP medical centre or nearby hospital for further medical care. The incumbent is required to quickly decide on the best method to stabilize the person and provide immediately medical relief during emergencies.

  • Minimum 5 years’ paramedic experience.
  • Minimum 5 years’ firefighting experience
  • Minimum 3 years in a chemical manufacturing environment.

Qualifications:

  • Matric.
  • Ambulance Emergency Assistance Registered with HPSCA
  • Intermediate Life Support (ILS)

Certifications:

  • Fire Fighter 1 and 2
  • Hazmat Awareness and Operational
  • Rope Rescue 1 or High Angle 1
  • Confined Space Rescue
  • Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus
  • Pump Driver/ operator

Reporting structure:

This position reports to the Business Security and Rescue Manager.   

Personal Circumstances:

  • Must be able to obtain a satisfactory medical report from the companies’ medical centre.
  • May be required to be on Standby
