Process Controller (temp)

Division: Production

Purpose of the job

The Process Controller reports to the Production supervisor and is responsible for the relief operation of the TLP 4/TLP1/3C/Liquefaction. The position is responsible for the continuous cost-effective operation of the plant, which transforms raw materials to a final product, with the purpose of monitoring & maintaining operation parameters within limits and efficiencies in accordance with the manufacturing process.

The abovementioned activities shall be conducted in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, No. 85 of 1993 and all relevant NCP policies and procedures.

This position profile acts as a guide to the role only, and additional work outcomes may be required to be performed by the incumbent.

Key performance area

  1. Process control.
    • Responsible for the relief operation of TLP 4/TLP1/3C/Liquefaction plant. In the event of manpower shortage the incumbent will be expected to cover on the affected plant.
    • Responsible for the safe startup and stoppage of the plant and monitoring the plant whilst in operation as per SOP’s.
    • Frequent analysis of the production process and its output and take corrective action for any deviation
    • Analyses the in-process and final products
    • Operates the plant according to the production plan
    • Recording of production and utilities information on log sheets or moodi system
    • Ensure that safe work permits and risk assessments are filled correctly.
    • Jobcard generation for process deviations and breakdowns. Ensures that job cards are generated correctly.
    • Reporting of  plant abnormalities and defects report to production Supervisor

    • Ensure that the plant data is recorded correctly and timeously on Moodi.

    • Be part of RCI investigations and assist in information gathering for abnormal conditions
    • Inspection of equipment on a shift basis and generate job card for any defect

Process Safety Engineer

Purpose of the job

The Process Safety Engineer is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and mitigating process safety risks associated with chemical manufacturing operations at NCP Chlorchem. This role ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and internal safety standards while promoting a culture of continuous improvement in process safety. The engineer collaborates cross-functionally to design and implement systems and procedures that prevent incidents involving hazardous chemicals. The role must support the implementation of Process Safety Management (PSM) in all production and storage facilities at NCP Chlorchem.

The abovementioned activities shall be conducted in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, No. 85 of 1993 and all relevant NCP policies and procedures. Key performance area

  1. Process Hazard Analysis.
    • Lead and conduct Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), such as Hazard and Operability Studies (HazOpS), What-If, 5 Whys, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA).
    • Perform risk assessments on equipment and operations involving flammable, reactive, or toxic substances.
  2. Compliance.
    • Ensure compliance to Management of Change, Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment, Compliance with Standards and Process Safety Knowledge Management standards as the PSM Element owner of these PSM elements.
    • Develop, review, and update process safety procedures, process documentation, and engineering controls.
    • Lead and support PSM compliance initiatives, policies, procedures and best practices throughout the organization.
    • Ensure corrective actions arising from PHAs, Integrated Management Systems (IMS) audit, Major Hazard Installation (MHI) audits, Process Safety Management (PSM) audits and other internal and external audits are implemented, tracked and reported on a frequent basis.
    • Collaborate with the Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) department to ensure alignment and compliance with the Process Safety Management system.

  3. Management of Change.
    • As custodian of the Management of Change (MOC) process, manage the process to ensure safe implementation of design or process changes.
    • Monitor regulatory changes, publicly available information, and significant incidents at other chemical plants in the industry and make recommendations to the business where applicable

    • Participate in and Review Pre Start-up Safety Reviews (PSSRs) for new or modified plant or equipment or after extended shutdown periods.

The Business Risk and Compliance Officer is responsible for the development, implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of agile, fit-for-purpose Risk Management, Business Continuity, and Compliance Frameworks and Programmes that align with the company’s strategic objectives, regulatory obligations, and operational goals.

This role translates legal and regulatory requirements into practical, actionable solutions, while fostering a strong culture of governance, ethics, and accountability across all company sites.

Functioning as an independent and objective body, the position evaluates and oversees risk, business continuity, and compliance matters to ensure the organization operates within its defined risk appetite and in full compliance with internal policies and external regulations.

The Business Risk and Compliance Officer proactively identifies and mitigates risks to minimize their impact on the organization, enabling the sustainable achievement of strategic objectives.

The role also leads and coordinates external legal compliance audits—particularly those related to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Environmental Acts, and other applicable legislation—ensuring timely execution and resolution of findings.

    • Draft and update compliance policies and procedures and submit to for review and approval prior to submission to GRC Director.

    • Review and distribute legislative updates to relevant NCP departments and sites, and update on relevant departmental / sites compliance universes.
    • Develop and monitor an implementation plan on gaps identified during compliance workshops to ensure that NCP remains compliant with all legislation and standards
    • Report and escalate any non-compliances to legal requirements, policies, procedures, standards that could adversely affect NCP to the relevant management and GRC Director.
    • Attend compliance-related meetings (e.g., MOC Meeting, Serious RCIs, Insurance) and identify any possible gaps not covered on current compliance universe and send updates to GRC Director.
    • Prepare the monthly Compliance report timeously and submit it to the GRC Director.
    • Prepare a quarterly dashboard Compliance report for the NCP board meetings and submit it to the GRC Director.
    • Act as alternative point of contact for Compliance throughout NCP and its sites.
    • Facilitate the Risk, Business Continuity Management and Compliance review meetings to EXCO.
    • Draft and compile the Risk, Business Continuity and Compliance review minutes.
    • Oversee the Sabinet subscription and take note of the CAIA advocacy to ensure that the business is up to date on the latest regulations, including changes to legislation and this is communicated and incorporate into the Compliance Universe, with key controls documented (where possible to show compliance) and compliance risk mitigation strategies documents to strive for compliance. 
    • Manages the business’ compliance with the GHS Regulations by informing the relevant stakeholders of the necessary regulations’ updates, ensures all NCP’s SDS’ and labels are reviewed and updated as per the regulatory review timeframes.
    • Facilitate the Health and Safety Legal compliance audits for all NCP sites by ensuring the agreed dates are booked in the relevant persons’ calendars, the scope of the audits is shared, the relevant personnel are prepared and informed of the upcoming audit, the findings are developed into a Corrective Action Plan (CAP).
    • Monitor the open findings arising from the Health and Safety legal compliance audits to ensure compliance, by verifying and ensure closure thereof on EDMS
  3. Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) & Operational Risk Management (ORM).
    • Update ERM & ORM business risk management policies, procedures, and framework for NCP, whilst ensuring that the ORM is integrated into the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Framework and there are no contradictions or differences in terminology and definitions
    • Update and maintain the ERM & ORM presentations used to create, promote, and maintain a culture of risk understanding, awareness, responsibility, and accountability throughout NCP’s sites.
    • Schedule and facilitate the ERM risk workshops to identify key risks and opportunities and to evaluate them accordingly.
    • Analyse and ensure quality of the ERM risk registers’ information, risk rating scales are updated and accurate, and ensure that risk treatments / mitigation strategies are clearly documented and monitored for reporting purposes. Follow up on overdue items and escalate where necessary to relevant management.
    • Consolidate the ERM departmental risk registers to enable the risk reporting process in determining, classifying, and rating NCP’s top 10 business risks, which will be used in EXCO and Board presentations.
    • Trend the risks according to categories identified within the risk registers to enable grouping or risks for a better consolidated view of tops risk themes.
    • Facilitate the insurance survey by ensuring the agreed dates are booked in the relevant persons’ calendars, the scope of the audits is shared, the relevant personnel are prepared and informed of the upcoming survey, all survey required documents are prepared and submitted to the insurer and the recommendations are developed into a Corrective Action Plan, (CAP).
    • Update and maintain Insurance risk survey feedback and findings monthly between NCP and NCP’s underwriters and submit them to the GRC Director for final review and communication back to the Insurers
    • Attend risk related meetings (e.g., MOC Meeting, Serious RCIs, Insurance) and identify any possible gaps not covered on current risk registers and update risk registers with ratings accordingly
    • Monitor external environmental for risk trends and themes that could potentially impact or affect NCP and consider during the risk management workshop and highlight these in monthly reports.
    • Act as main point of contact for ERM and ORM throughout NCP and its sites.
  4. Business Continuity Management (BCM).
    • Develop and Maintain the Business Continuity Management Plan (BCMP):
    • Ensure the BCMP is current, comprehensive, and reflects changes in business operations, processes, and organizational structure.
    • Conduct Business Impact Analyses (BIAs):
    • Identify critical business functions, assess the impact of disruptions, and determine recovery priorities and timeframes.
    • Facilitate Risk Assessments Related to Continuity:
    • Evaluate potential threats and vulnerabilities that could disrupt operations and integrate findings into the BCMP.
    • Coordinate and Facilitate BCM Reviews and Workshops:
    • Engage departments and heads of departments across all sites in reviewing and validating continuity plans, ensuring alignment with business needs and mitigating downtime risks  (e.g., plant redundancy, alternative suppliers, IT failovers, remote work locations).
    • Document and Update Recovery Strategies:
    • Work with departmental managers to ensure recovery plans include redundancy protocols, alternative suppliers, IT failovers, and remote work capabilities etc.
    • Test and Exercise the BCMP:
    • Plan and conduct tabletop exercises, simulations, and drills to validate the effectiveness of continuity and recovery strategies.
    • Monitor and Align BCM with Risk Management Frameworks:
    • Ensure BCM risks are reflected in the enterprise and operational risk registers and are actively monitored and mitigated.
    • Ensure Regulatory Compliance:
    • Verify that the BCMP complies with applicable legislation, standards (e.g., ISO 22301), and industry best practices.
    • Promote BCM Awareness:
    • Develop and deliver training and awareness sessions to staff across all departments and sites.

Purpose of the job

The Fitter reports to the Mechanical Supervisor and has the primary responsibilities to:

  • Inspect the mechanical assets within the area of responsibility.
  • Repair and/or replace the equipment that is not fit-for-service or unsafe.
  • Maintain and/or improve mechanical assets to ensure safe, effective and continuous availability of the assets.
  • Ensure that the Housekeeping within the area of responsibility is always acceptable and/or better than it was before the artisan interacted with the area in question.

Production Supervisor (NP)

Division: Production (Northern Plants)

Purpose of the job

The Northern Plants Supervisor mainly is responsible for managing all production, production personnel and crisis response matters on a shift basis. The incumbent will be managing, revising, and improving all processes while on shift and must ensure that these functions are delivered to the organizational requirements. The incumbent must ensure that all resources are managed and controlled, e.g., raw materials, machines, people, cost as well as the actual delivery of required product within timelines. The incumbent will also be responsible for generating reports on a shift and monthly basis and ensure all recorded information is correct. The incumbent shall perform his duties at Northern Plants or at such other locations as the company may determine from time to time on notification to the incumbent. The incumbent will be responsible for the following process units: Plastichlor plant, Eaglebrook plant, HCl plant, and Hypo plants which include Sulphuric acid distribution.

In a case of manpower shortage, including standby personnel, the incumbent will also be required to assist in the roles, where necessary, until such a time that Senior Process Controllers/Process Controllers are available.

Key performance area

  1. Ensure effective Management of the Production Shift.
    • Provide input to the sections Production Plan.
    • Ensure compliance with production/output, SHERQ and PSM targets within shift.
    • Manage the relief schedule in line with annual leave and training plans for Senior Process Controllers and Process Controllers.
    • Ensure that all staff within their own shifts are aware of the monthly operational plan/requirements.
    • Implement all measurement mechanisms developed within own shifts.
    • Monitor progress to ensure successful implementation of plans and achievement of targets.

The incumbent will also rotate as required to be on rotation when required (training, and work of process systems review and updates)

    • Conduct safety discussions to ensure that the team members are aligned with the present risk in the plant, risk controls and risk mitigations plans.
    • Conduct monthly critical and non-critical task observations, and act to close any loops or gaps identified.
    • Review the SHE Rep file for compliance to safety inspections schedules, and act immediately to close any gaps or loopholes identified.
    • Identify and mitigate any potential risks or hazards, conduct regular safety inspections, and implement emergency procedures as necessary.
    • Conduct assurance checks onsite on the critical activities that you have issued permits to work on.
    • Conduct emergency exercises and assurance checks on the compliance to the emergency procedures
    • Ensure maintenance of files, such as hazardous waste databases, chemical usage data, personnel exposure information, or diagrams showing equipment locations
    • Ensure development of recommendations to control or eliminate unsafe conditions at workplaces or public facilities
    • Ensure compliance with standard operating procedures
    • Reduction and elimination of spills and emissions
    • Implementation on a shift basis of SHEQ corrective and preventative actions
    • Ensure that the housekeeping of all areas with sections are kept up to standards (<90% on housekeeping audits)

Experience

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 with Mathematics and science.
  • NQF level 4 Chemical Operations (Advantageous)
  • National Diploma Chemical Engineering or Production / Operations management (Advantageous).

This position reports to the Primary Manufacturing Manager.
