Purpose of the job

The SADC Business Development Lead is responsible for leading and executing the regional commercial growth strategy across the SADC market, with full accountability for export sales performance, market expansion, strategic customer and distributor management, and sustainable profitability.

The role is accountable for identifying and developing new business opportunities, strengthening market presence, and driving revenue, volume, market share, and profit growth across the region. This includes leveraging in-depth market, customer, and channel knowledge to develop and implement effective commercial strategies aligned to the organisation’s strategic objectives.

The incumbent provides leadership and coordination of all SADC sales and business development activities, ensuring effective stakeholder engagement, cross-functional collaboration, and long-term customer relationship management. The role further ensures compliance with applicable regulatory, commercial, logistics, and governance requirements across all export markets while positioning the organisation as a preferred supplier within the SADC region.

The abovementioned activities shall be conducted in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, No. 85 of 1993 and all relevant NCP policies and procedures.

This position profile acts as a guide to the role only, and additional work outcomes may be required to be performed by the incumbent.

Key performance area

  1. Business Development / Revenue Generation.
    • Assume overall accountability for the management and growth of the SADC export sales channel, including distributor networks and strategic partner relationships.
    • Lead and direct export sales activities to ensure effective execution across all channels, including alignment with logistics, supply chain, customer service, and other supporting functions.
    • Develop and implement strategic market expansion plans for the SADC region through the identification of new market opportunities, untapped territories, and innovative partnership models.
    • Drive sustainable revenue, volume, market share, and profitability growth through effective commercial strategies, customer engagement, and distributor performance management.
    • Ensure effective account management and customer support by maintaining strong relationships with key customers, distributors, and stakeholders across the SADC region.
    • Prepare and present detailed sales, market, and export performance reports, providing strategic insights, business opportunities, risk analysis, and recommendations to management.
  2. Market Intelligence.
    • Develop and execute strategic sales and business development plans aligned to organizational objectives and regional market requirements.
    • Conduct ongoing market analysis to identify emerging trends, customer requirements, competitive activities, pricing movements, and growth opportunities within the SADC region.
    • Drive data-driven decision-making through the use of advanced analytics, forecasting, pricing strategies, and supply chain optimization to improve commercial and operational performance.
    • Analyze export sales performance and distributor effectiveness to identify improvement opportunities and implement corrective actions where required.
    • Identify market gaps, new product opportunities, and potential strategic partnerships to strengthen market presence and competitive advantage.
    • Ensure effective communication of customer, distributor, and market feedback to relevant internal stakeholders to support business planning, product development, and service improvement initiatives.
    • Champion continuous improvement initiatives by adapting commercial and distribution strategies in response to changing market conditions and customer needs.
  3. Collaboration.
    • Build, maintain, and strengthen strategic relationships with distributors, customers, regulatory authorities, logistics partners, and other key stakeholders to support business growth and operational effectiveness.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Operations, Supply Chain, Technical, Finance, Sales and Marketing, and Logistics, to ensure effective execution of regional business objectives.
    • Coordinate and support the development and execution of sales campaigns, technical projects, promotional activities, and participation in trade exhibitions and industry events to enhance brand presence within the region.
    • Support the development and implementation of customer-focused solutions through collaborative engagement with internal and external stakeholders.
    • Ensure compliance with all applicable legal, regulatory, commercial, safety, and governance requirements relating to export sales and regional business operations.
    • Promote effective communication, collaboration, and alignment across all business functions to achieve strategic and operational objectives.
    • Share knowledge with sales and customer service teams.

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies

  • Advanced product knowledge of chlorine and related chemical products
  • Ability to conduct and interpret jar testing, pH testing, turbidity testing, and hardness testing.
  • Ability to work independently and with cross functional teams.
  • Strong understanding of chlorine and its derivatives.
  • Sound understanding of chemical handling, logistics, and regulatory requirements within SADC markets
  • Process engineering capability to support customers with operational solutions, including plant expansions, storage installations, and process optimisation.
  • Strong commercial, supply chain, and distributor management capability
  • Financial and commercial acumen, including pricing, margin management, and contract negotiations.
  • Ability to build and scale business development functions within targeted markets
  • Drive revenue growth and gross profit performance through strategic customer, distributor, and partnership development
  • Develop and implement market expansion strategies across the SADC region
  • Establish and maintain strategic relationships with key end users, distributors, and stakeholders
  • Improve operational frameworks for customer onboarding, account management, and service delivery
  • Secure high-impact commercial agreements and long-term strategic partnerships

Qualifications

  • Matric
  • Chemical Engineering Degree or equivalent.
  • Business Diploma (advantage).

Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 years’ sales experience in chemical manufacturing environment
  • 5 years’ proven experience in exports into SADC including supply chain management and logistics.
  • Proven track record to illustrate growth in market share and expansion sales territories
  • Proven experience in strategic business development and high-level negotiations.
  • Experience in leading a team (advantage).

Important Requirements:

  • Valid Passport and willing to travel across SADC
  • 50% -60% travel required.

Reporting structure:

This position reports to the Sales & Marketing Executive.         

Personal Circumstances:

  • Must be able to obtain a satisfactory medical report from the companies’ medical centre.
