Purpose of the job
The Fire and Rescue Officer reports to the Business Security & Rescue Manager. The Fire and Rescue Officer is required to respond to a wide variety of calls: as well as fires, assist with safe making of equipment for vessel entry, and hazardous chemical spills. The incumbent must conduct inspections of fire equipment on site, complete all relevant documentation for auditing and for future reference.
The Fire and Rescue Officer provides first aid assistance to the injured wherein their goal is to stabilize the person before transferring them to the NCP medical centre or nearby hospital for further medical care. The incumbent is required to quickly decide on the best method to stabilize the person and provide immediately medical relief during emergencies.
The abovementioned activities shall be conducted in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, No. 85 of 1993 and all relevant NCP policies and procedures.

- General Duties.
- Operating tools and equipment used for firefighting safely and effectively

- Ensure that the required equipment is stored, transported and cared for so that they are always in good working order.
- Respond to fire and rescue incidents and operate in a team framework.
- Comply with the confined space entry procedure by conducting gas tests before vessel entry and continuously thereafter.
- Provide appropriate medical care within the scope of knowledge in emergency situations
- Ensure continuous improvement of unit’s efficiency and achievement of company objectives.
- Analyze hazardous situations while establishing quick solutions and actions
- Perform general maintenance on firefighting equipment
- Maintain a clean environment in the fire department facilities.
- Compliance to fire codes requirements.
- Inspect fire detection equipment, alarm and all systems and keep them in working order.
- Responsible for ensuring quick and efficient medical response at all times
- Perform regular fire safety inspections of all facilities, ensuring that they meet all necessary codes and regulations.
- Maintain all fire safety equipment on site, such as fire extinguishers and other fire-suppression equipment.
- Report and escalate any non-compliances to NCP policies, procedures and systems relating to operations that could adversely affect NCP to relevant line manager.
- Fire and Gas Emission Response.
- Respond to fire emergencies and gas emissions and taking appropriate responsive actions.
- Ensure proper functioning of fire hydrants and maintain availability of emergency water supplies.
- Be familiar with and adhere to laws and policies and remain up to date on all municipal and national codes and regulations.
- Comply with basic scene safety checks and the associated basic risk assessments, working with other Fire and Rescue Officer.
- Emergency Response.
- Respond to emergencies, perform patient stabilization before transporting patient to on-site medical center or hospital. It is required that the Fire Officer be on site in 15 minutes.
- Ensure that an adequate degree of monitoring and treatment is maintained and prolonged until the patient is transferred to a medical center or hospital, while remaining within the scope of this role’s training and competency.
- Observe patient vital signs using skills and equipment relevant to scope of practice as directed and reporting any changes to the other emergency services staff.
- Comply with basic scene safety checks and the associated basic risk assessments, working with other Fire and Rescue Officer.
- Properly kit out and clean the ambulance (paying attention to infection prevention and control) after every call.
- Contact the emergency control center to request extra support when needed.
- Supporting the delivery of first aid and minor emergency treatments.
- Perform resuscitation efforts on employees during an emergency.
- Safely transport injured employees while providing on-going treatment and monitoring enroute to hospital.
- Record patient information and treatment administered before handing over patient at hospital.
- Maintain confidentiality in relation to personal data held for the injured employee, ensure data is processed lawfully; for no purpose other than for which it was obtained; is relevant to that purpose; is retained for no longer than is necessary; is processed in accordance with the rights of the subject to access and accuracy; and is protected from accidental loss or damage in accordance with the requirements of the POPI Act.

Experience
- Minimum 5 years’ paramedic experience.
- Minimum 5 years’ firefighting experience
- Minimum 3 years in a chemical manufacturing environment.
Qualifications:
- Matric.
- Ambulance Emergency Assistance Registered with HPSCA
- Intermediate Life Support (ILS)
- Certificate in Fire Technology
- Diploma: Fire Technology (advantageous)
Certifications:
- Fire Fighter 1 and 2
- Hazmat Awareness and Operational
- Rope Rescue 1 or High Angle 1
- Confined Space Rescue
- Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus
- Pump Driver/ operator
Reporting structure:
This position reports to the Business Security and Rescue Manager.
Personal Circumstances:
- Must be able to obtain a satisfactory medical report from the companies’ medical centre.
- May be required to be on Standby
