Purpose of the job
The Instrumentation Technician reports to the Instrumentation Supervisor and has the primary responsibilities to:

Inspect the Instrumentation within the area of responsibility.

Repair and/or replace the equipment that is not fit-for-service or unsafe.

Maintain and/or Improve Instrumentation to ensure safe and continuous availability of the assets.

Ensure that the Housekeeping within the area of responsibility is always acceptable and/or better than it was before the artisan interacted with the area in question.

Ensure Feedback is given to the line manager concerning the Inspection, Repair and/or Replacement conducted within the area of responsibility. The Feedback shall include a formal 5WHY and/or RCA report that describes the root cause of the breakdown and/or failure of an equipment(s) and/or system(s).

Review opportunities (including organising external expertise and resources) to implement the Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) strategies with instrumentation systems stability as the main priority.

Plan the technical execution of the corrective maintenance and preventative maintenance strategies following the Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) approach in collaboration with the Reliability Engineering personnel.

Lead the Management of Change to stabilise and the correct the Process Control and Interfacing (PC&I) and deviation from the engineering best practice standards.

Measure, identify and improve deviations from Operations Within Agreed Parameters on the instrumentation systems and equipment.
The abovementioned activities shall be conducted in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, No. 85 of 1993 and all relevant NCP policies and procedures.
This position profile acts as a guide to the role only, and additional work outcomes may be required to be performed by the incumbent.

Key performance area
1.
Review.

Review the operational parameters against the design and/or agreed operating parameters and determine improvement opportunities.

Review historical failure, lead instrumentation Root Cause Analysis to determine repeat failures and determine the criticality of equipment.

Perform Programmable Logic Controller programming as corrective maintenance.
2.
Plan.

Conduct Failure Mode Effect Analysis and determine the suitable maintenance strategies to achieve value of the assets

Continually review the quality and quantity of spares available onsite issue a report including recommendation on possible improvements.

Review the available technical skills in the instrumentation department, source training resources and collaborate with the Instrumentation Supervisor in the planning training of the instrumentation personnel.

Lead.

Perform Plan Job Task Observations and coach and/or correct any behavior that poses danger against safety and health of personnel (including contractors).

Participate in 5S continuously, implement standards and enforce 5S standards.

Become a technical lead in your area of responsibility.

Enforce good practices concerning housekeeping.

Perform on-the-job training for the mechanician on the supervision roles as second in charge personnel

Perform corrective maintenance on the Process Control and Interfacing (PC&I) and correct deviation from the engineering best practice standards
Lead management of change on ABB, Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Johnson Quantum controllers, VSD to improve the operational efficiency of the system and/or equipment (including energy efficiency).

Measure.

Measure the critical process flows and/or levels, report on deviation that may cause deviations to the quality of the products.

Measure the critical parameters of the PC&I and compile a report of the recommended corrections.

Implement condition-based monitoring system and implement maintenance strategies to improve the operation thereof.
5.
Safety and Compliance:

Ensure compliance with relevant safety regulations, industry standards, and company policies in all instrumentation and control activities.

Conduct thorough safety assessments of control systems, identifying potential hazards and implementing appropriate mitigation measures

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies

Technical knowledge demonstrated and learnt in the instrumentation systems and installations in the chemical processing plants.

Extensive knowledge of ISO 14001, 45001, 9001

Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety, SIL and Area Classification Standards

SHERQ Training course

Safety Work Permit training.

Computer Literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point)

Ariscu

Basic Programming on DCS and PLC

Attention to details

Be able to do basic problem solving, decision making and analysis

Ability to work under pressure

Knowledge of the Area Classification and Safety integrity Level (SIL) Standards.

Experience

Minimum 5 years’ experience working with industrial instrumentations in the chemical processing plants.

Qualifications:

Matric

National Diploma in Instrumentation Engineering or Equivalent (NQF 6)

Adv Diploma /BEng/BTech in Instrumentation Engineering or Equivalent (NQF7) (Advantage)

Instrumentation Red Seal (Advantage)

Reporting structure:
This position reports to the Instrumentation Supervisor.

Personal Circumstances:

Must be able to obtain a satisfactory medical report from the companies’ medical centre.

May be required to be on Standby.
