Purpose of the job

The Material Handler reports to the Logistics Activity Coordinator and is responsible for generating completed and accurate traceable records of order fulfilment of sequence of activities accomplished as the team resulting in safely filled and despatched chlorine drums and cylinders, adhering to SHERQ principles.

The abovementioned activities shall be conducted in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, No. 85 of 1993 and all relevant NCP policies and procedures.

This position profile acts as a guide to the role only, and additional work outcomes may be required to be performed by the incumbent.

Key performance area

  1. Receiving empty drums and cylinders.
  2. Ensure that the empty cylinders and drums are offloaded
  3. Scan Units.
  4. Follow the SOP.
  • Venting of drums and cylinders.
  • Ensure that all drums and cylinders received from customers are booked in.
  • Connect the drums and cylinders to the venting system by linking through serpentine rods
  • Open the valves from respective drums and cylinders.
  • Responsible for the inspection and cleanliness of the area or Housekeeping.
  • Responsible of checking sniffer pressure gauge hourly.
  • Follow SOP
  • Scan Units.
  • Responsible for ensuring venting of all residual chlorine from drums and cylinders
  • Responsible for disconnecting the drums and cylinders from the venting system
  • Responsible for the inspection and cleanliness of the area or Housekeeping.
  • Responsible for scanning units
  • Responsible for the inspection and cleanliness of the area or Housekeeping.

  • Scan Units
  • Responsible for ensuring venting of all residual chlorine from drums and cylinders.
  • Washing, drying and valve installation.
  • Responsible for washing and drying drums and cylinders
  • Responsible for valve installation in cylinders
  • Responsible for the inspection and cleanliness of the area or Housekeeping.
  • Follow SOP.
  • Filling chlorine gas into drums and cylinders and then fulfil dispatching.
  • Fill the drum or cylinder with chlorine gas
  • Help with other tasks in the section of a plant as may be necessary and for which the incumbent is trained and capable of performing
  • Responsible for the inspection and cleanliness of the area or Housekeeping.
  • Follow SOP.
  • Compliance.
  • Responsible for the inspection of driven/lifting machinery (Cranes, forklifts)
  • Responsible for the inspection and assembling of lifting equipment (cylinder pallets)
  • Responsible for the generation of work requests/job-cards and the issuing of Safe Work Permits as designated/authorized official.
  • Ensure relevant checklists are completed
  • Perform daily stock taking and when required.
  • Ad Hoc.
  • Carry out all lawful and reasonable instructions given to the incumbent
  • Help with other tasks in the section of a plant as may be necessary and for which the incumbent is trained and capable of performing  
  • Train other Material Handlers and Adherence to SHERQ principle
  • Assist in other plants of the Section when requested.

  • How to handle dangerous goods

Experience

  • 2 to 3 years’ experience working in a similar position in a chemical manufacturing environment.
  • Must have a valid Forklift and Overhead Crane license and should be able to operate these machines.

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 with Mathematics and science.

Reporting structure:

This position reports to the Logistics Activity Coordinator.       

Personal Circumstances:

  • Must be able to obtain a satisfactory medical report from the companies’ medical centre.
