Purpose of the job
Work of this class involves planning and supervising the activities of employees engaged in the operation
and repair of equipment such as conveyor belts, moving equipment, filtration systems, electrical systems and
depot infrastructure. The incumbent coordinates the allocations of resources, ensuring the proper
maintenance of all machinery. Other responsibilities include training employees, sourcing and contacting
contract companies to replace incapacitated items, and maintaining daily equipment logs. The position
allows substantial independence in order to keep maintenance and engineering projects on schedule; work
is intermittently reviewed by the Business Manager through verbal discussions and cost reviews. The
incumbent is responsible for providing cost estimates and justification for major repairs and modifications,
while the Business Manager makes the final decision on machinery replacement and changes in department
equipment policy.

Key performance area
People Management:
- Manages all people issues for direct subordinates through training and development, discipline,
 performance management, supervision to achieve deliverables.
- Controls timekeeping of staff and manages transgressors when necessary.
- Drafts and implements training and development plan for maintenance staff in conjunction with staff
 annually.
- Prioritises labour and resources to suit workload daily and weekly to achieve distribution
 deliverables.
- Manages sound labour relations and sound industrial relations issues on site at all times to avoid
 labour unrest.
- Sources additional labour if situation demands this during plant breakdowns.
- Manages working shift schedule to ensure 24 hour 365 days per annum operation of the site.
 Maintenance Management:
- Implements mechanical maintenance initiatives to ensure the site remains technologically advanced
 continuously and site downtime is minimized.
- Leads and manages the site maintenance strategy and plans by leading the implementation of
 strategic projects.
- Compilation of work procedures and departmental policies.

- Establishment of a preventative maintenance strategy and optimizing the business processes.
- Establishment of the asset management and control processes
- Drives optimization (and continuous improvement) of maintenance processes and best practices for
 operations systems and applications by planning for maintenance initiatives to avoid unnecessary
 site shutdown times.
- Controls the Maintenance Management Systems (DMS) schedule monthly to ensure that the
 inventory is continuously up to date.
- Source all maintenance spares for the site as and when necessary (e.g., in a breakdown).
- This position is on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week to avoid any downtime on site.
- Ensures good safety and housekeeping by completing walkabout inspections daily.
 Legal Compliance:
- Implements and maintains best engineering practices and standards on site at all times.
- Oversees legal compliance with respect to all the relevant legislation applicable to the site.
- Compilation of safe work procedures. Keeping equipment logs, administer and maintain
 comprehensive records for each item equipment.
- Perform audits on suppliers on matters of quality, safety and health compliance.
 Budgeting:
- Manages maintenance projects and working cost expenses within the allocated operational budget.
- Optimise budget and financial management of the maintenance department continuously.
- Oversees and leads all capital expenditure projects for the company.
- Obtains quotations from suppliers in preparing relevant documentation for projects.
- Procure engineering spares from reputable suppliers daily.
- Manage engineering costs and assists with annual engineering budget planning for the company.

 Experience
- Minimum of 5 years’ Supervisor and Manager experience.
- Minimum of 5 years’ demonstrating planning ability.
 Qualifications:
- N6/National Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical or Instrumentation Engineering
- B Degree Mechanical, Electrical or Instrumentation Engineering (Advantageous)
Reporting structure:
- This position reports to the Business Operations Manager.
 Personal Circumstances:
- Must be able to obtain a satisfactory medical report from the companies’ medical centre.
