Purpose of the job

The Material Handler reports to the Production Supervisor and is responsible for continuous cost-
effective service of offloading raw materials at the Salt warehouse. Conduct visual checks on the salt

to be offloaded, accept the incoming delivery, and then offload the trucks. Operate plant according to
production plan. Ensure sufficient salt is fed to the dissolvers. Responsible for accurate recording of all
salt loads received in Moodi data capturing. Ensure safe and accurate shift handover. Report any
deviations from the process to the Shift Supervisor. Follow procedures observing at all times EH&S
guidelines and communicate clearly with other departments.
Key performance area

  1. OFFLOADING ROAD TANKERS.
  • Responsible for accepting and offloading salt deliveries.
  • Records all required information on salt deliveries in the required log sheet
  • Offload salt deliveries and move the salt to designated area within the plant.
  • Adhere to SHERQ guidelines at all times.
  • Work together with the Front End Loader Drivers to ensure constant filling of salt to the
    hoppers.
  1. SAMPLING.
  • Responsible for taking salt samples and conducting visual quality checks of salt to be
    offloaded.
  • Take Salt Dissolver Brine sample for analysis and concentration.
  • Ensure that the samples /retention samples are taken as per procedure requirements
    and is submitted to the QC lab for analysis.
  • Ensure that the sample register is filled in each time sample is submitted at the QC
    laboratory.
  1. TRACEABILITY.
  • Responsible for ensuring good traceability of offloaded deliveries.
  • Reads delivery note to ascertain materials in the truck to be offloaded.
  • Records all required information on salt deliveries in the required log sheets.
  • Ensure traceability of the truck loads that have been received and recorded.
  • Responsible for accurate recording of all salt loads received in the Moodi data capturing
    system.
  1. SAFE PLANT OPERATION AND SHUTDOWN.
  • Responsible for safe and efficient operation of equipment as per SOP.
  • Operate plant according to production plan.
  • Ensure sufficient salt is fed into the dissolver.
  • Monitor the plant whilst is in operation and take necessary corrective action when there
    is deviation.
  • Safe making of equipment’s and prepare Permit to work.
  • Ensure safe and proper shift handover is done.
  • Reports any deviate from process to Production Shift Supervisor.
  1. Ad Hoc.
  • Carry out all lawful and reasonable instructions given to the incumbent.
  • Assist in other plants of the Section when requested.
  • Train other Material Handlers and Adherence to SHERQ principle
  • Carrying out products using a forklift.
  1. COMPLYING WITH EH&S REQUIREMENTS
  • Ensure compliance with all EH&S policies and procedures within own area of operation.
  • Attend any RCI invite and conduct preliminary investigation as soon as an incident
    occurs.
  • Ensure good housekeeping after any maintenance work as per job request by checking
    the area where work was done before signing off the work as complete.

Technical Competencies

  • The incumbent should know how to handle dangerous goods.
  • Basic knowledge of the equipment that is used.
  • Knowledge of operational procedures, systems that are operational in workplace.
  • Understanding hazards and precautions needed to work with materials.
  • Know product name and codes, operational, mechanical, instrument and electrical terms
    and how they relate to his work environment

Experience

  • 2 to 3 years’ experience working in a similar position in a chemical manufacturing environment.

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 with Maths and Science
  • NQF Level 2: Chemical Operations

Reporting structure:

  • This position reports to the Production Supervisor.
    Personal Circumstances:
  • Must be able to obtain a satisfactory medical report from the companies’ medical centre.
