Purpose of the job
The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for the management and administration of the Analytical Chemistry and Quality Control Laboratory functions, to

Oversee the daily operations of the laboratories (Quality Control, Analytical, & Cato Ridge plant labs), by providing scientific information, products & services by conducting lab tests, developing methods, and maintaining equipment & supplies

Ensure that all lab equipment including plant lab is calibrated as well as record keeping of the status of the equipment.

Ensure that the plant labs are aligned with the main lab regarding SOP’s and reporting units and specifications.

Form an integral part in training of the plant lab personnel as well as signing off on the training matrix.

Ensure the analysis of routine samples (raw materials and final products), compatibility materials and reactive chemicals. Ensure lab scale testing of alternative raw materials.

Ensure the analysis non-routine samples (contaminants, process anomalies and sediments);

Ensure plant process chemistry and production process problem solving and optimization on the Chlor-Alkali plant and in the broader group.

Ensure technical support for sales and marketing on all product ranges (product development & evaluation for tenders).

Ensure that laboratory SOP & Analytical Methods, lab records & documentations are updated, reviewed, and maintained.

Ensure the monitoring, maintenance, reporting, overseeing and continuous improvement of Analytical process and Quality Assurance.

Ensure implementation of most effective technologies (MET) within the organization.

Ensure assistance and support with strategic projects as deemed necessary within the organization.

The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for ensuring compliance with ISO, Responsible Care, Process Safety Management, and good lab practice (GLP) within the laboratories. Suitable training programs for personnel development are required so that long term strategic goals can be met.
The abovementioned activities shall be conducted in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, No. 85 of 1993 and all relevant NCP policies and procedures.

Key performance area
1.
Lead Laboratory management function.

Ensures that employees follow industry standards and safety regulations for all aspects of the laboratories’ functions.

Acts as an advisor to subordinates to meet schedules and/or resolve technical problems.

Assist in formulating and implementing the short and long-range goals for the operation of the laboratories; set priorities, assign responsibilities, and establish timetables

Provide guidance as requested regarding hiring, training, promotions, and disciplinary issues for laboratory personnel.

Administer and coordinate the technical activities of the Quality Control and Analytical Labs, including equipment, employees, supplies, software, and documentation

Manage the Plant Labs equipment, including calibration and analytical methods.

Standards and codes of good practice.

Administer and coordinate the technical activities, and infrastructure related to the operation of the laboratories and ensure compliance to all company Quality, Environmental, Health & Safety legislation, policies, and procedures within the department

Enforce departmental chemical safety practices and be familiar with the regulatory requirements specific to the lab and ensures all users are incompliant with those standards.

Maintain quality checks on safety of laboratories, including biohazards and ensure maintenance of the facilities according to Good Laboratory Practices.

Preparation of technical reports reflecting volume of work, procedures utilized and test results, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate current and projected laboratory services and productivity, to ensure cost saving, efficiency, and continuous improvement.

Continuous improvement and operational excellence.

Frequently interacts with external labs and coordinates the program activities with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and employees and represent the department/laboratory in interactions with other departments

Maintain liaison with other departments to solve specific operating problems and improve chemical technical activities.

Serve as an advisor to plant and other departmental managers to meet schedules and or resolve technical problems and ensure continuous improvement.

Provide a chemistry technical support service to Production, Marketing & Sales, and Operations by investigating plant, customer and supply related issues as requested by the function.

Evaluate and recommend new techniques and technologies to ensure cost saving, efficiency, and continuous improvement in the lab and in the broader group of companies.

Regular meetings with the Quality Manager to discuss issues in the plant and analysis.

Draw up reports and SPC charts and give feedback to the Quality Manager.

Facilitate the training of the Plant Lab operators to ensure the quality and integrity of the Plant Lab function

Manage stock and budget for the Plant Lab reagents and consumables.
4.
Budget.

Generate the annual departmental fixed costs budget and Capex budget and ensure that spending does not exceed the budget.

Compile and prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, improved efficiencies and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Submit applications for purchases of major capital equipment
5.
Leadership and Management.

Lead and manage a team of Chemists and Technicians.

Ensures that laboratory personnel are trained and competent through proper performance management.

Provide mentoring, leadership, and support to subordinates through interaction and meetings to ensure that all operational requirements are met and high staff retention

Establish a culture of accountability, teamwork, knowledge sharing and inclusivity.

Resolves grievances\disciplinary process as per NCP policies and procedures.

Ensure that laboratory personnel have the necessary resources to perform their duties.

Experience

10 years relevant laboratory experience of which at least 5 years in a supervisory role.

At least 5 years’ experience in a Chemical Manufacturing environment

Knowledge of the Chlor-Alkali process

Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Qualifications:

Grade 12

BSc, or BTech in Chemistry

ISO 9001, 14001 implementation and auditing training

Training in instrument analysis and root cause analysis.

Reporting structure:
This position reports to the Technical Manager: Laboratories & Strategic Projects.

Personal Circumstances:

Must be able to obtain a satisfactory medical report from the companies’ medical Centre.
